Ajman Free Zone in 2026: What It Costs, Why the Tax Works, and the $10 Billion Economy Behind It

Setup that used to take two weeks now takes about an hour. Packages start from Dh4,166. And the "budget" free zone everyone underestimates is quietly running a ten-billion-dollar trading economy. Here's the honest, insider read.

Business Setup · Ajman Free Zone

The 30-Second Version

  • Ajman Free Zone (AFZ) is doubling its overseas offices from 10 to 20, chasing manufacturers and SMEs in India's tier-2 and tier-3 cities plus China, Turkey, Russia, Egypt and beyond.
  • Company setup that once took 10–15 days now takes about an hour; entry packages start from Dh4,166 under a current 25% discount.
  • As a designated free zone, it offers 0% corporate tax on qualifying income, 100% foreign ownership and full profit repatriation.
  • Its real economy is far bigger than the "cheap option" reputation: ~$10bn GDP, ~$1.4bn of SME factory exports to Saudi Arabia, a 1,300-shop China Mall, and a vehicle re-export district in talks with BYD.

Chapter 01

The zone that just doubled down on the world

Most people file Ajman Free Zone under "the affordable one" and move on. That framing is about to look badly out of date. In July 2026, AFZ confirmed it is doubling its international footprint, having opened 10 overseas offices in recent months and targeting 20 by next year.

India is the centre of gravity. Rather than crowding into Delhi and Mumbai alongside every other jurisdiction, the authority is deliberately courting tier-2 and tier-3 manufacturing hubs — cities that already export globally but have had little hand-holding into the UAE. Offices are running in Delhi, Kerala and Chennai, with the wider push reaching China, Turkey, Russia, Egypt and Paris.

"We are heavily invested in India."

— Zubair Ul Islam, Director of Sales, Ajman Free Zone Authority

The logic is simple: meet founders where they are, remove the friction before they ever board a plane, and make Ajman the default landing pad for exporters expanding into the Gulf. For anyone in trading, electronics or light manufacturing, that shift in strategy is worth paying attention to.

Chapter 02

What a company actually costs here

The headline is real: entry packages start from Dh4,166 with a 25% promotional discount live at the time of writing. But a licence price on a brochure is not the same as your all-in cost. Your real number moves with three levers — your activity, how many residence visas you need, and whether you take a flexi-desk or a physical office or warehouse.

Where Ajman genuinely wins is the combination of low entry price and speed. Use the selector below to see how it stacks up against the usual alternatives.

Chapter 03

The 0% tax question, answered honestly

"Tax-free" is the phrase everyone reaches for. The accurate version is more nuanced — and understanding it is what separates a clean structure from an expensive surprise once corporate tax bites.

Is Ajman Free Zone genuinely 0% tax?

It can be. AFZ is a designated free zone, and a qualifying free zone person can pay 0% corporate tax on qualifying income. That's the key qualifier most brochures quietly drop.

What counts as "qualifying income"?

Broadly, income from transactions with other free zone businesses and certain qualifying activities. Income that falls outside the rules — for example, certain mainland-sourced revenue — can be taxed at the standard 9%. Adequate substance (real people, real premises, real activity) is required to hold the benefit.

What do I get regardless?

100% foreign ownership, full repatriation of capital and profits, no personal income tax, and exemption from import/export duties within the zone. Those apply broadly, not just to qualifying income.

So what's the catch?

There isn't a catch so much as a condition: the 0% headline is a reward for structuring your flows and substance correctly. Get advice before you commit to activities and invoicing patterns — retro-fixing a structure is far more expensive than designing it right.

Chapter 04

The $10 billion economy hiding behind the "cheap" label

Here's the part the cost-comparison crowd misses. Ajman generated roughly $10 billion in GDP in 2024, and manufacturing is doing a lot of that lifting. Per Ajman Chamber figures, the emirate's small and medium factories exported around $1.4 billion of goods to Saudi Arabia last year alone. Textiles, plastics and industrial goods are real, shipping product — this is not a paper-company jurisdiction.

China Mall

~1,300 wholesale retail shops at roughly 95% occupancy, with a phase-two expansion planned over three years.

Auto re-export district

~500 plots, ~350 already taken, and advanced talks with EV maker BYD to open a showroom on site.

Port & logistics

Ajman Port on the doorstep, ~30 minutes from Dubai — built for import, export and re-export flows.

Industrial land

The authority is sourcing more industrial land to court larger China- and India-based manufacturing projects.

If your business touches physical goods — electronics, auto parts, textiles, wholesale, re-export — this ecosystem is the actual selling point, and it's the one competitors with prettier addresses can't easily match.

Chapter 05

What setup actually feels like from the inside

We don't write about Ajman Free Zone from a brochure — Virtuo is licensed here ourselves, and we set up other people's companies here week in, week out. So here's the unvarnished version of what the "one hour" headline does and doesn't cover.

The licence issuance really has collapsed to about an hour once your paperwork is clean — that part is genuine. What still takes real-world time is everything around it: Emirates ID and medical for visas, and above all corporate bank account opening, which remains the single biggest bottleneck for new UAE companies regardless of zone. Plan for the licence to be fast and the bank to be the long pole.

Pre-flight checklist

Get these lined up before you start and the "one hour" claim becomes real.

  • Nail the activity first. Your business activity drives your licence type, cost and later your bank's comfort level. Choose from the 3,000+ available with intent.
  • Decide your visa count. Even a flexi-desk carries a visa allocation — know how many you actually need before quoting.
  • Prepare a clean document pack. Passports, photos, proof of address, a tight business description. Messy inputs are what turn "one hour" into one week.
  • Line up banking early. Have your business model, expected flows and supporting docs ready — this is where timelines really live or die.
  • Plan your substance. If you want the 0% qualifying benefit, design real activity and premises in from day one.
Chapter 06

Beyond licences: family offices, offshore and what's next

The most interesting signal isn't the price cut — it's the move upmarket. Alongside trading and manufacturing licences, AFZ is expanding into family offices, offshore structures and specialised licensing. That's a deliberate reach for higher-value, longer-horizon capital, not just volume setups.

Add a "remarkable June" and, per the authority, no visible dip in investor confidence despite regional uncertainty, and the picture is of a zone in expansion mode rather than defence. For founders weighing where to plant a Gulf entity in 2026, that trajectory matters as much as today's sticker price.

The story is no longer "the cheap zone." It's the fast, trade-heavy zone that's moving upmarket while everyone else was still quoting its old reputation.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to set up in Ajman Free Zone?

Entry packages start from Dh4,166 under a current 25% discount. Your final cost depends on activity, number of visas, and office/warehouse choice — but it remains one of the most affordable routes in the UAE.

How long does setup take?

Licence issuance has dropped from 10–15 days to about an hour with digital onboarding, once documents are in order. Visas and banking follow after.

Is it really tax-free?

As a designated free zone, a qualifying free zone person can pay 0% corporate tax on qualifying income, with 100% ownership and full repatriation. Non-qualifying income can face 9% — structure and substance matter.

Is Ajman good for trading and re-export?

Yes — Ajman Port, the 1,300-shop China Mall and a dedicated vehicle re-export district make it strong for physical-goods businesses. SME factories exported ~$1.4bn to Saudi Arabia last year.

Can foreigners own 100%?

Yes. 100% foreign ownership, no local sponsor required, full repatriation of capital and profits, and no personal income tax.
